French Empire Silk Spencer, ca. 1805

Early 19th‑Century Neoclassical Fashion in Lilac Silk

This rare silk spencer from the Empire period, dating to ca. 1805 and originating from France, is an exquisite example of early 19th‑century Neoclassical fashion. Designed to be worn over dresses with a high‑set Empire waistline, this short jacket features a delicate lilac‑toned silk in beautifully preserved condition, capturing the refined elegance of the Napoleonic era.

Puffed Sleeves, Bust Lacing and Decorative Borders

The spencer is constructed with puffed sleeves, lined on the inside with fine gauze fabric to give them their characteristic volume. The front closes with bust lacing, while the U‑shaped neckline, sleeve edges, and bustline are finished with contrasting decorative borders, adding visual refinement typical of early 19th‑century French dressmaking. The interior is lined with cotton, ensuring both structure and comfort.

Hand‑Sewn Craftsmanship and Condition Report

Entirely hand‑sewn with excellent craftsmanship, the garment remains in very good condition, showing only a discreet stain in the chest area — remarkably minimal for a textile of this age. Decorative accessories (including the bodice) are not included.

Collecting Significance: Empire‑Period French Textiles

With a bust measurement of approx. 80 cm, this piece is a highly desirable addition for collectors of Empire‑period clothing, antique French textiles, and museum‑quality early 19th‑century fashion.
